I've been thinking about getting a cat since I live alone (and my apartment doesn't allow dogs) and would like some activity in my place. I'm also rebuilding my life after coming out of a 2 year dark hole where I was unemployed, had some health issues. and family issues. I'm better now and have a very well paying job and slowly rebuilding and I go to therapy. Also starting to slowly social reintegrate. Any advice on getting a cat? Pros/ cons and will a cat also help mental health?

SmakeTalk Only con is that, honestly, pets can live for a very long time! It's a blessing, but some people will buy a cat because they want one at the time but aren't considering they'll be around in 13 years and that might affect what they can do in the future.

I'd only get a pet (cat or any other kind) if you're able to commit to caring for them for over a decade, provided they're not already 6 or 7 years old.

That being said, there's every possible benefit. Pets are popular for a lot of good reasons, the least of which being some kind of companionship and having something to care for. It's a wonderful thing if you find a cat you connect with. Just... don't do it because you only want a cat now. Get one if you want for as long as possible.

bazilbt I think cats are something that help my mental health, especially living alone. It's another being to interact with during the day. It also makes you do some routine activities every day, for instance | always clean litter boxes, put out food, and check in with them.

smallteabee I love Cats, and I cannot imagine life without my little meow box. They have gotten me through some of the worst issues in my life, when I lived alone I would talk to my cat constantly (I still do as a not single man). They are special little creatures, and if you're lucky you will form a strong bond.

It's not milk and roses starting off, learning eachother takes a moment, but cats prefer a litter box so potty training is easy. Cats 10/10, will always recommend.

When I think about how I hate this timeline, all I have to do is remember how it also gave me cats

weaseltorpedo Always have pet cat if possible. Benefits? In a roundabout way, my cat got me my wife! The cat was a big kinda grumpy tomcat, looked like a Maine coon but more compact and stocky (also he was a rescue, no papers).

He wasnt friendly with new people, but was totally devoted to me. The girl I met who later became my wife, she always wanted a pet cat but her parents wouldn't allow it. So at least at first, part of my appeal was that if she hung out with me she also got to hang out with my cat.

She said I wasnt her type, either. She always dated the sensitive "tortured artist" type of guys whereas Im much more rough around the edges. But she figured that the care I showed my cat, and how much he loved me, had to indicate something good about me as a person. I almost got fired when he got out and didnt come back for days. I called out of work multiple times to go look for him.

Anyways, she and I are still together almost 20 years later. Married for 17. And that cat (rip) is buried in the backyard of the house where we're raising two kids. tl;dr: get the cat

Stock-Side-6767 Love my sweet ladies. Always have someone happy that I'm home. On bad days, caring for cats gets you out of bed and into the flow.

Dry_Yogurt2458 They stop the home being so empty. When I get home they are there to say hello, they might say hello and then bugger off to do their own thing, but they are always there.

Sharing a home and interacting in the same space with other living breathing beings just makes life more pleasurable.

DoubleResponsible276 Do it brother. I delayed getting one cause I thought I wasn't ready. Man, they require almost nothing to be happy. I say go to your nearest animal shelter and see. You don't have to adopt right away, but the one I chose, lets you take one out at a time and they have a huge closed play area so you can bond with the cat. $25 adoption fee and it's the best $25 I ever spent.

I joked that if I ever get a cat, I'm gonna go with a Harry Potter mentality of the wand chooses the wizard. First kitty had a brother and I had no intention of getting more than 1. She was terrified and the brother jumped between us to defend her with his back legs shaking. Second one had 2 brothers and had no interest in me. And then I saw my current cat, alone and the only one that was observing me. We bonded instantly and I adopted her right away.

Was given a cat almost a year later and I'll say 2 cats is kinda better than 1, as they entertain each other very well. Food, litter etc costs double but I don't mind. It still cheaper than back when I had 2 60+lb dogs.

Pros. My cats k I every rodent in sight. They are very routine based so sometimes they wake me up if I oversleep, forget to feed them etc. it also helps when you fall into depression and feel stuck, so I just look at them and start feeding them, clean their water fountain, clean their litter box and usually that helps me start doing tasks around to help me zap out of depression.

Cons. They'll scratch stuff. I bought couch covers for the ends that come with a scratch pad protect the couches. They'll get everywhere, so clean your countertops when cooking. Some might try to mark their territory and man cat piss is strong, I use a uv flashlight to help pinpoint the smell if I can't find it, but it only happens like 3-4 times a year. Medical bills, I'm lucky that hasn't happened but that's pricey, oh and animal shelters usually spay/neuter them prior so you save on that cost
